DESCRIPTION: Wing length 7 to 9.75mm.  A longish and narrow species with broad blunt ended yellow markings on tergite 2, yellow bands on tergites 3 and 4 and a yellow scutellum are distinctive. BEHAVIOUR: Can be found in large numbers in mid-summer. Has a preference for umbellifers, Bramble flowers and Ragworts but will feed on a wide variety of flowers. The larvae feed on aphids usually found on trees. DISTRIBUTION: Found throughout the UK. HABITAT: Deciduous woodland and open glades. PERIOD: April to November.
